We protect childhood while the journey continues.

A Catholic apostolate devoted to accompanying and protecting children and adolescents from migrant families in situations of vulnerability in Mexico.

That no migrant child in Mexico should lose their childhood because of migration.

Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico.

Migration can be temporary.

Childhood cannot be recovered.

A family may be passing through. It may be waiting. It may not know how long the road will last. But a child still needs safety, education, play, affection, community and hope. Which is why we cannot wait for the journey to end before protecting their childhood.

I

Before a migrant, a child

Who we are talking about when we talk about this work.

Before being a migrant, a foreigner, a refugee, a displaced person or any other condition that describes their situation, there is a child. A child who needs to play. To learn. To feel safe. To have friends. To be heard. To be with their family. To dream. To grow. To be a child.

Their migration status does not define their dignity.

And their circumstances should not decide how much of their childhood they get to live.

II

Because there are childhoods being left along the way

Why we exist.

When a family migrates, the adults carry with them decisions, responsibilities, uncertainties and problems that are often beyond their control. But children live through those circumstances without having chosen them.

Constant movement can interrupt their education, their routines, their bonds, their emotional stability and their space to play. A family's mobility should not become the immobility of their children's future.

That is what we want to protect.

We do not simply want to meet needs. We want to protect childhood.

We believe every child has a dignity that does not depend on their nationality, their papers, their economic situation or the circumstances their family is going through. And that protecting a child means far more than keeping them physically safe: it means helping them keep learning, playing, relating to others, recovering stability, strengthening their bonds and looking ahead.

III

Our faith teaches us to recognise a face, not a statistic

Where this work comes from.

Luz en el Camino comes from a deeply Catholic conviction: every person holds a dignity received from God. Which is why we serve the child in front of us, not an abstract category. We do not see only migrants. We see people. We see families. We see children. And in the vulnerable we recognise a concrete call to live charity.

Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.
Matthew 18, 5
They too knew the road.

Jesus was a child. Mary was a mother. Joseph was a guardian. And the Holy Family also had to set out on a journey to protect the life of the Child. So when we look at a migrant family, we are not looking at something foreign to the Gospel. Where there is a child who needs protection, there is an opportunity to live guardianship, charity and hope.

Welcome
We create a first encounter that is dignified, human and safe.
Protect
We identify risks and activate the corresponding measures.
Promote
We make education, play, development and opportunity possible.
Strengthen
We accompany the family and its protective capacities.
Integrate
We connect with community, school and support networks.
Accompany
We stay present after the activity is over.
VI

A place where a child can feel like a child again

The Centres, and the network that makes them possible.

Luz en el Camino Centres
Safe community spaces

Places where children and adolescents can find protection, accompaniment, education, play and community while their families go through situations of mobility. Today the Centres operate informally, through direct contact with those who accompany these families. That contact is the way in.

Learn
Educational support and formative activities.
Play
Sport, art, recreation and time together.
Be heard
Accompaniment and space to express themselves.
Connect
Access to support networks and services.
Grow
An environment that gives childhood back some stability.

We do not only want to build centres. We want to build places of belonging.

One light can light another.

Luz en el Camino is conceived as a network, because protecting childhood takes more than a single organisation. It takes communities willing to open their doors, professionals willing to put their knowledge at the service of others, schools willing to receive, parishes willing to accompany, shelters willing to collaborate, companies willing to contribute and people willing to serve.

There are people who decide not to walk past

They are the Guardians of Childhood.

A Guardian is not simply someone who wants to help. It is someone who decides to be prepared to accompany. Who understands that a child's vulnerability demands prudence. Who knows how to listen. Who knows how to respect limits. Who knows when to act. And above all, who understands that serving a child is a responsibility.

Good will needs preparation.

When we work with vulnerable children, wanting to help is not enough. Charity needs prudence. Service needs preparation. Trust needs responsibility. Which is why we are building a culture of child protection based on protocols, training, supervision, confidentiality and professional referral.

We never improvise with a child's vulnerability.

VIII

Dignity before pity

Our promise about how we tell this story.

We will never use a child's suffering to sell compassion.

We do not want a child to be known for their pain. We want them to be known for their dignity. We do not want to display vulnerability: we want to protect it. We do not want to tell stories that provoke pity, but stories that awaken responsibility and hope.

For the same reason, we do not measure this work in figures that do not yet exist. Our impact is not measured only in people served.

A child who goes back to school.
A child who plays again.
A family that finds a network.
A situation of risk that was caught in time.
A volunteer who learned how to protect.
A parish that opened its doors.
A community that learned how to welcome.

Because the real result is not how many children we served. It is how many children got to keep being children.

That no migrant child in Mexico should lose their childhood because of migration.

We dream of a national network of communities able to welcome, protect, promote, accompany and integrate children and families in contexts of mobility. A network that makes it possible for no child to have to walk alone, even in the middle of an uncertain road.
